Number 40 - Stay in a trullo house

During my latest trip to Italy I visited the town of Alberobello and stayed at one of the traditional trullo houses in the old town.

It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before, an entire village of trulli houses whose stone cone rooftops are simply beautiful.

It was in the 1500s that the first trulli were built. Archaeological evidence suggests there were only about 40 then but within a couple of centuries there were more than 3,500.

The trullo I stayed in was called Dimore Antichi Mestiero originally built in the 18th century and was the home to a family of shepherds. The restored trullo is located in the area Aja Piccola, which is small but perfect, with the most amazing roof terrace with views of ‘Monti’ the entire trulli village.

Here’s my recommendations for where to eat and drink in Alberobello

La Laconda del Gallo - a cute restaurant inside a trullo house with a small outdoor terrace perfect for a glass of wine and antipasti in the sun

Martinucci - the best spot in town for gelato, pastries and cakes!

Casa nova restaurant - located in the basement of an old trullo house ghjer menu of meats and homemade pasta is amazing

La cantina - near the Cathedral is the smallest cutest family run Italian restaurant. With only 7 tables you need to book in advance or be prepared to have to wait for hours. Watch while the chefs cooks traditional Italian dishes in the open kitchen.

L'Altro Caffè - the perfect spot for Aperols and Aperitifs

I can only describe Alberobello as magical. Many of the trulli houses are still occupied by Italian families today, who choose to live in these basic stone hut houses even when there are such modern alternatives available.

A house is made of walls and beams a home is built with love and dreams.
