Number 41 - Trek through the Amazon Rainforest

It’s always been a childhood dream of mine to once go to the Amazon Rainforest. On my recent trip to Peru my dream came true and I spent 2 and half days exploring, trekking taking nitghtime boat rides through the jungle river, walking across hanging bridges and nature spotting on hidden lakes deep in the direct, all whilst coping with humid temperatures, bugs bugs and more bugs and lack of electricity.

The term ‘getting close to nature’ doesn’t get more real than this. And not having access to the internet and mobile signal was a great detox...and who needs it when you’re surrounded by, wildlife in its natural habitat, the sounds of nature, birds chirping, monkeys howling, bugs humming to the backdrop of the rustle of trees combined to create the magnificent soundtrack of nature, along with stunning sunsets, and river reflections that simply take your breath away = The most beautiful show on earth.

During our 2 and half day trip in the Amazon we stayed at the most beautiful nature resort Inkaterra Concepcion. Our cabana was perfectly nestled in amongst the jungle with panaromoc views of of the surrounding trees throughout.

We started our day with a trek around the surrounding are learning from the nature specialists about the ‘lungs of our planet’ the different types of trees and the animals and bugs to depend upon them.

The evening descended and we embarked on a night boat tour along the Madre River. It took a while and felt strange cruising along in pitch black until we spotted White Caimen a Capybara and night owl.

Day 2 and this was our trek day. We set off at 6am on a boat down to the Tampobata natural reserve site.

We started with a 2 and half hour trek through the jungle whilst looking out for nature and this is when it happened. As we were trekking through past a mud ditch, I lost my footing on my right leg and went to grab hold of a tree, which turned out to be a twig and yep...I face planted right into the mud ditch. I was so lucky to be travelling with an amazing group of people who all came to my aid to help clean me up and make me laugh in what wasn’t the best situation, but I carried on through the trek...there was no way I was going to miss this.

And hour later and we arrived by the lake, jumped into small canoe boats and heard out. As we rode along piranhas and through the trees into the expanse we were floating on THE most beautiful lake I’ve ever seen. Reflecting colours of blue, green in still waters and nothing but sounds of nature it was so peaceful and stunning. We spotted Macaws flying above, monkeys jumping through the trees and a huge black caiman swimming right in front of us.

Later that day and once I’d had the chance to have a shower and into clean clothes we set out to the Inkaterra Reserva Amazonia nature research site where we climbed up a wooden tower to reach the hanging bridges. It was a bit wobbly but was great to see the rainforest from a different perspective, high up above, at one with the trees looking out across to masses of green.

We stepped aboard our boat once again and as we cruised back to the resort for some well earned Pisco Sours after a long day of trekking and exploring....nature had one more spectacle for us...the most beautiful and breathtaking sunsets. Colours of gold, orange, red, blue pink and purple, each minute changing colours until the sun finally set, on the most perfect Amazon rainforest adventure of a lifetime.

Sometimes you need to leave home, get a different view, surround yourself with nature, disconnect from modern day and appreciate what amazing and beautifully natural world we live in.
